Carmelia M. Howe

Carmelia M. Howe, 95, formerly of Mayville, N.Y., passed away Saturday (Feb. 1, 2020) in Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing.

She was born July 27, 1924, in Queens, N.Y., the daughter of the late John F. and Elizabeth T. Soriano MacDowell Sr.

Carmelia was a graduate of Washington-Irving High School in New York City and received an associate’s degree from Jamestown Community College.

She was employed by Chautauqua Central School as a dietician for 30 years, retiring in 1987. Carmelia was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mayville and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood. While residing at Brookdale of Lakewood, Carmelia was a member of the Bell Ring Choir.

Carmelia enjoyed her family, especially her grand children, great-grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and sewing and made numerous blankets and sweaters for her family. Carmelia also enjoyed cooking, reading, and making handmade cards.

Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth Montagna of Lakewood; seven grandchildren: Dawn (Michael) Sard, Danielle (Wayne) Wiley, Leonard (Deanna) Montagna, David Howe, Kara (Richard) Lyon, Lisa (Craig) Sundlov and Bradley Howe; great grandchildren: Amanda Sard, Erin (Mike) Lapota, Nicholas Sard (Kathleen), Courtney Larson, Jennifer Johnson (Jacob), Garrett Wiley, Evelyn Montagna; and four great-great- grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Howe Sr., whom she married Sept, 18, 1939m in Brooklyn, N,Y,, who died in 1991; a daughter, Barbara Ann Howe; two sons: Carl J. Howe and William C. Howe Jr.; two brothers: William and John MacDowell; and two sisters: Margaret MacDowell and Elizabeth Anzalone.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Falconer Funeral Home. The Rev. Piotr Zacaynski, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lakewood will officiate. Burial will be in Chautauqua Cemetery.

Friends will be received by the family from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
