Evelyn J. “Jean” Nelson

Evelyn J. “Jean” Nelson, 83, of Riverside Road, Jamestown, N.Y., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020, at Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility, Jamestown, N.Y.

Jean was born Sept. 1, 1936, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of the late Aldin and Mary Ellen Croghan Seekins.

She was raised and educated in the Ivory area and graduated from Frewsburg High School. Following high school she went into the nursing program at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y. and received her registered nurse degree.

Jean worked at the baseball stadium and Harvey & Carey Drug Store in her younger years. After she finished the nursing program, she worked as a registered nurse in the emergency room at the former WCA Hospital and at Dr. Culver’s office in Falconer, N.Y. Jean later worked as a nursing supervisor at Lutheran Social Services and Fenton Park.

She was a former member of Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Frewsburg, N.Y., her family had started the church. Jean came from a family of 11 children. She attended St. James Roman Catholic Church. Jean was a member and the treasurer of the Chautauqua County Trail Riders Club. Jean helped with the 4-H Club when her daughter was involved in 4-H.

She collected carnival glass and enjoyed going antique shopping at yard sales and auctions. Jean was a caring woman who help take care of her autistic grandson, her own son and her parents in their later years.

Jean is survived by her husband of 50 years, Raymond A. Nelson, whom she married on Sept. 6, 1969, in Frewsburg, N.Y.; her son, Carl A. Nelson of Jamestown, N.Y.; a daughter, Amy (Tom) Siderits and their son, Joey Siderits, all of Jamestown, N.Y.; a sister, Katy Sturm of Hamburg, N.Y.; and 38 nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care, 20 W. Fairmount Ave., Lakewood, NY 14750.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2020, at St. James Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Darrell Duffy, pastor will be celebrant. Visitation will not be observed. Burial will be in Kiantone Maple Grove Cemetery, Jamestown, N.Y.
