Anita A. Cooney

Anita A. Cooney, 84, formerly of 120 Aldren Ave., Jamestown, passed away peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease at Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility in Gerry on Monday, Nov. 25, 2019.

Anita was born Oct. 9, 1935, in Canastota, N.Y., a daughter of the late Harrison and Hazel Edson Newhall.

In her late teens and early twenty’s Anita taught adults and children how to roller skate at the skating rink in Celoron. She also participated in skating shows. Anita loved camping at Allegheny State Park, spending time in Alexandria Bay and Nashville and volunteering at the Jamestown Audubon. She was a huge fan of old country music. In more recent years, she loved watching trains in Westfield with her husband.

On June 18, 1955, Anita married the love of her life, David L. Cooney Sr. She was a loving mom of Diana (Michael) Zubrzycki, Donya (late Gregg) Moore, and David (Viva) Cooney, Jr. Very loving grandma of several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the sister of John E. (Joan) Newhall Sr. and sister-in-law of Nancy Newhall. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and special friends, Barb and Jim Krill.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Robert Vincent, Leslie Vincent, Harold “Skeet” Vincent and Harrison Newhall Jr.; and a sister, Lois Newhall.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019, in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel S. Rumfelt, chaplain of Lutheran Home will officiate.

Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Heritage Village for their care, compassion, and support this past year. We are so grateful to all of you.
