Wyllys L. “Bill” Myers

Wyllys L. “Bill” Myers, 90, born Sept. 13, 1929, of 3515 Wing Road, Busti, passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2019, in the Heritage Green Rehab & Skilled Nursing Facility, surrounded by his family.

Bill spent his lifetime on their farm in Busti raising American Quarter Horses along with his loving wife Virginia, who predeceased him on Aug. 1, 2000. He and Gin owned and promoted the youngest AQHA horse to ever receive his AQHA Championship award, their stallion Reno Roper. Reno also won many National Standings. Bill and Gin owned and trained several other AQHA horses that went on to win various state futurities as well as standing multiple stallions and breeding top mares.

Bill served in the U.S. Army from 1946-49.

Bill was an avid skier competing in different states on downhill racing teams. He was awarded various medals while competing. Bill was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award by the Busti Fire Department for assisting in the rescue of a young man on Sept. 15, 1979.

Bill was raised in Conewango, N.Y., on his parents, George and Esther Myers family farm along with his sister, Jennie Myers Fosburg and brother, Howard “Buzz” Myers, who all predeceased Bill.

Bill was also predeceased by his eldest son, George “Skip” Myers in 1994 and daughter Cheryl Luttrell in 2005.

Surviving Bill are his daughter, Diane (Bob) Hamilton of Ashville, N.Y.; his son, Kevin (Debbie) Myers of Kiantone, N.Y., and Skip’s wife, Kathy (Tim) Barton of Fredonia, N.Y. His cherished grandchildren: John Myers of Elmhurst, N.Y., Michelle (Eric) Carpenter of Richmond, Va., Sara Hamilton of Ashville, N.Y., Kelly (Steve) Cofer of Sugar Grove, Pa., Ashley (Zac) Hnatyszyn of West Ellicott, N.Y., Jacob (Lori) Myers of Busti, N.Y., and Cody (Bailey) Myers of Russell, Pa. Also six precious great- grandchildren: Garrett and Meredith Cofer, Avery and Lucas Hnatyszyn and Weston and Evelyn Myers.

Also surviving is Bill’s niece, Nancy (Chuck) LaChiusa of Grand Island, N.Y. Nancy and Chuck were always a wonderful presence in Bill’s life.

The family wishes to express gratitude to Bill’s neighbors: John and Bev Kollig who were so kind and helpful these past few years. Also, to doctors Eric Arnone of WNY Urology and PCP Anthony Bartholomew of Fredonia for their constant compassionate care.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019, in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Brian Haight, pastor of Mission Covenant Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Busti Cemetery.

Friends will be received for two hours prior to the service, from noon-2 p.m., on Tuesday in the funeral home.
