Duane R. Widrig

Duane R. Widrig , 81, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Jamestown, died Friday, May 24, 2019. He passed away in Baptist Medical Center, after a two month battle with lung cancer.

Woody was born April 3, 1938, in Jamestown, N.Y., to the late Robert D. and Arlene Widrig Curtis.

He left New York to join the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Green Cove Springs and he was honorably discharged in 1962. He met Janice Grant in 1957, at Skateland, in Jacksonville, they married in 1959 in Folkston, Ga.

Woody is preceded in death by his wife, Janice, 2005; father, Robert Widrig, 1954; mother, Arlene Widrig Curtis, 2003; stepfather, Harold Curtis, 1971; three sisters: JoAnn Hobart, 1980, Kathleen Bradley, 2006 and Patricia Zimmer, 2019; brother, James Widrig, 2011; and niece, Joan Widrig, 1979.

He is survived by his four children: Michael, Malinda, Lisa (Julian) and Daniel (Kaylee). He was a proud grandfather to Michael, (Melissa) Jonathan, Sebastian, Raven, Katee, Lily, Kelsi and Jack; and one great-grandson, Michael III. He is also survived by his brother, Robert (Anne) Widrig of Sugar Grove, Pa.; and his sister, Judy Marlett of Warren, Pa.

Woody went on to be a truck driver for over 30 years and received many awards for driving over a million miles with no accidents, from Ryder/P.I.E Nationwide. After he retired, he was the full time caregiver of his wife, until her death. Woody was an avid fisherman since he was a little boy and loved being on the river. He spent his recent years, almost everyday, at his favorite fishing dock, Reedie Point, where he had countless close friends and fishing buddies, too many to name.

A service will be held at a later date, at his home in Jacksonville, Fla., where he resided for 58 years. Following his service, his cremains will be pulled down to his fishing dock one last time in his fishing wagon, by his children, grandchildren, great-grand- son and friends.

A military funeral will be announced at a later date also, where he and our mother’s cremains will be laid to rest at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
