Leonard R. Present

Leonard R. Present, 93, of Commerce Township, Mich., formerly of Jamestown, N.Y., died Monday (Dec. 31, 2018) in the VA Healthcare Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich.

He was born Oct. 14, 1925, in Jamestown, the son of Abe and Frances Price Present. A graduate of Jamestown High School, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 103rd Division of the 7th Army in Germany. Wounded in action, he was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal. Following his military service and graduation from Allegheny College, he returned to Jamestown and was employed by General Motors Acceptance Corporation.

In the early 1950’s, he relocated to the Detroit area, where he was employed by the finance division of the former American Motors Corporation. He later became associated with the National Bank of Detroit, where he spent the majority of his working career.

Always active even into his later years, he enjoyed swimming, tennis and playing golf every chance that he could. He also enjoyed watching golf, and watching the Detroit professional sports teams, especially the Lions and Pistons. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Mariette Present; five children: Diane (Joe) Shulte, Tim (Chris) Present, Dan (Cindy) Present, Laura (Dave) Jones and Sarah Present; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four stepchildren: Pam, Jeff, and Tim (Mari) Austin, and Suzanne (Richard) Zimmer; and four step grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Golla Present; two brothers: Jess J. and William E. Present; and by a sister, Anna Rae Present.

A celebration of Len’s life will be held privately Saturday (Jan. 5, 2019) in Harrison Township, Mich with immediate family.
