Jack Alton Calhoun

Jack Alton Calhoun, 73, of 34 W. Main St., Columbus, Pa., passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019.

Jack was born at Westfield Hospital in Westfield, N.Y., on Sept. 28, 1945, the sixth of seven sons of the late Archie and Virginia Marion (Tillotson) Calhoun. He was the first of their children not born at home.

On Dec. 21, 1974, Jack married Caroline Augustine, she survives.

Jack’s greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. He loved telling stories and sharing his love of carving with others. Jack enjoyed nearly 39 happy years of sobriety thanks to Alcoholics Anonymous and lived a life example of the “joy of sobriety.” He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his pleasure in making others laugh.

Jack was a member of Harbor Ridge Wesleyan Methodist Church, Corry.

In 2007, Jack retired from Associated Springs of Corry, Pa., where he worked since 1984. He had previously been employed by C.E. Lyon and Sons, Sherman, N.Y., from 1971-82 and prior to that, had worked odd jobs in the farming and logging industry as well as a machine shop in Jamestown, N.Y.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Jack served his country honorably from July of 1963 until September of 1966. His service time was spent at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, San Diego Naval Training Center, aboard the USS Bushnell in Key West, Fla., and the USS Orion in Norfolk, Va. He graduated from Sherman Central High School in 1963. For more than 50 years, Jack served as a volunteer fireman with 20 of those years as a member of the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Artists Guild of Corry, Pa., the Historical Society of Corry, Pa,, and the Country Carvers of Cambridge Springs, Pa. He was a skilled wood carver, having won several ribbons and awards at various fairs and carving shows. Additionally, he established a local carving club, taught wood carving and wood whittling at the Higher Education Center of Corry, Pa., and shared his skills with the Boy Scouts.

In addition to his wife, Caroline, of 44 years, Jack is survived by five children: John Calhoun (Sarah) of Alto, Ga., Joe Calhoun (Cecelia) of Raeford, N.C., Cara Calhoun of Dewittville, N.Y., Jack Calhoun, Jr. of Jamestown, N.Y., and Gene Calhoun (Tammy) of Conewango Valley, N.Y.; 19 grandchildren: Kirsten Calhoun, Matthew Calhoun, Candice Calhoun, Savannah Rosage, Derek Calhoun, Arian Altamerano, Ryan Calhoun, Joshua Calhoun, Bella Calhoun, Roger Ransbury Jr., Carl Ransbury, Caleb Ransbury, Kier MaGill, Aerial Calhoun (Justin Wilcox), Eli Calhoun, Luke Calhoun, Christopher Calhoun, Sean Calhoun and Kimberly Calhoun; nine greatgrandchildren: a brother, Barney Calhoun (Betty) of Sherman, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Rick Augustine (Gloria) of Meadville, Pa., and many many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by five brothers: Richard, Peter, Stephen, David and James Calhoun.

A memorial service will be held at a later date which will be announced.
