Donald West King

Donald W. King died peacefully at home on Oct. 28, 2018.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dr. Mary Elizabeth King; his three children: Donald W. King lll, Katherine A. King and David L. Kingl and six grandchildren: Juliette, Jessica, Madeleine, Helen, Matteo and Emma.

Donald W. King was born in Cochranton, Pa., on June 30, 1927, but grew up in Jamestown on Fifth Street, and spent many summers in Chautauqua, where his mother ran a boarding house.

He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1944, attended college at Syracuse University in 1944 and 1945, and later graduated from Syracuse College of Medicine in 1949. He served as a pathology resident at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York from 1949-52, and joined the U.S. Army serving at Fort Knox Kentucky from 1952-54 during the Korean War.

He was appointed professor and chairman of pathology at the University of Colorado in 1960, where he remained until 1966. During this period, he was a founding director of the Given Institute of Pathobiology in Aspen.

Then, in 1967, he became Francis Delafield professor and chairman of pathology, Columbia University in New York, where he trained many residents who later assumed leadership positions throughout the country.

He loved Chautauqua and returned every summer for family reunions, often with the families of his brothers and sister: Jim, Dick, Bill and Margaret.
