Marvin Vollentine Wellman, 92, of Gerry, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2018, at UPMC Chautauqua WCA.
He was born May 30, 1925, in Ellington, a son of the late Elwyn and Irene Vollentine Wellman.
Marv was a veteran of World War II serving with the First Marine Division, Seventh Marine Regiment, First Battalion, Bravo Company, Machine Gun Squad and was in the first wave of troops at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, Japan, April 1, 1945, and fought in a major battle, Operation Iceberg, in the Pacific War fought on the Island of Okinawa. The 82 day battle lasted until June 22, 1945 resulting in over 100,000 Japanese and 50,000 Allies casualties. Marv served from March 21, 1944, to May 6, 1946, and is a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal.
Marv spent many enjoyable years running a dairy farm and at the same time raising six children with his wife by his side. He was also employed for over 20 years at Cockaigne Ski Resort, Sinclairville, and learned to ski at the age of 62. He attended the Conewango Valley United Methodist Church. In earlier, years he enjoyed snowmobiling.
Devoted husband of 63 years to Marcia C. Weiler Wellman, whom he married March 21, 1954; father of Kirk of Ashville, Kris (Cheryl) of Tampa, Fla., Tracy of Gerry, Perry (Cyndi) of Windsor, Va., Scott (Margaret) of Tucson, Ariz., and the late Lori Lynn Wellman (2015); grandfather of Molly Bristol, Dana Hilliker, Carolyn, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Aaron, Austin, Mackenzi, Samantha, Sebastian, Elliott and Morgan Wellman; great-grandfather of Scotty and Ace; brother of Oleta “Lea” Lindahl of Knoxville, Tenn., JoAnn Walenty of Jamestown and the late Paul and Donald Wellman. Also survived by nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday in the Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville, with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Burial will be in Rutledge Rural Cemetery, Conewango Valley.
