Virginia C. “Ginny” Barnes
Virginia C. “Ginny” Barnes, 87, formerly of Falconer passed away Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2017) in Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing, Gerry.
She was born July 29, 1930, in N. Hornell, N.Y., where she was adopted by Walter J. and Elbertine Crippen Clark. At the age of 16, Bertha Allen became her legal guardian and she became part of the Allen family.
Ginny was a 1947 graduate of Falconer High School and 1984 graduate of Jamestown Community College with an associate’s degree in applied science. In earlier years, she was employed by the former Nelson and Butts Florist.
She was a member of the Falconer United Methodist Church, a 60-year member of the church choir, a Living Memorial Trust Committee member, and served on other church committees. She enjoyed a week at Chautauqua every summer, the Operas at Norton Hall, and her membership in the Chautauqua Literacy & Scientific Circle, and she was a member of the Mozart Club of Jamestown. Ginny spent many hours sewing clothes for her family and later took up knitting for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cribbage with friends, boating on Chautauqua Lake, fishing in Ca-nada on Lake Lady Evelyn, and spending time on the Fort Myers Beach with her husband at their condominium. She sang with the choir at Trinity United Methodist Church in Sarasota where she spent many winters. Besides singing, and reading, she loved opera and theatre, traveling the states, Europe and Canada. She was especially fond of the beach and bird watching. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchil-dren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are four children: Becki Creighton (Ian Bland) of Sarasota, Fla., James S. (Beth) Barnes of Jamestown, Jeffrey A. (Lynda) Barnes of Falconer and Judy Ann (Michael) Kittel of Charlottesville, Va.; 11 grandchildren: Erik (Miranda) Barnes, Bethany (Josh) Zellmer, Theresa (Jason) Hopkins, Thomas Barnes, Ashely (Jeremy) Dates, Kristi Barnes (Ryan Pollock), Jaime Barnes, Robert Purser, Sarah Purser Bojorquez (Marco Bojorquez), Angela Celeste (John Ainsworth) and Benjamin-Josiah (Robin) Huff; four stepgrandchil-dren: Melissa Vullo (Jason Dorman), Crystal Surdyk, Holly Snyder and Marcie (Michael) Brown; many great-grandchildren; two foster brothers: Melvin (Judy) Allen of Westfield, N.Y., and Samuel (June) Allen of California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed-ward S. “Stu” Barnes whom she married April 17, 1948, in Falconer, who died April 22, 1992; a son Ronald E. Barnes on March 16, 2009; two foster sisters, Mary Walker on Dec. 8, 2016, Dora Elliot on Oct. 22, 2017; a foster brother, Burke F. Allen Jr. and a stepgrandchild, Matthew Vullo.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Falconer United Methodist Church. Rev. Heather Allport-Cohoon pastor of the church will officiate. Entombment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received by the family from 5-8 p.m. Monday in the Falconer Funeral Home and from 10:30-11 a.m. Tuesday in the church.
