Muriel (Dottie) Nelson, 92, passed peacefully on July 10, 2017, following a short illness. She was born on Feb. 25, 1925, in Grove City, Pa., the only child of Howard (Pat) and Sarah McLaughlin (Sadie) Wood.
She graduated from Grove City High School in 1943, and began working at the Cooper-Bessemer Corp.
She married Harold (Hud) Nelson on June 15, 1944, prior to him going overseas as a Navy Seabee.
In 1945, she took flying lessons and received her pilot’s license from Wilson Aviation, one of the first women to do so at Grove City Airport. She enrolled in the Civilian Pilot Training Program and was waiting for the next class when peace was declared.
They moved to Clymer, N.Y., in 1957 where Harold was employed by Tennessee Gas Pipeline, and retired to Sebring, Fla., in 1981. She had resided at the home of her daughter and son in-law, Karen and Otis Jarrett in Lake Wales, FL, for nearly seven years.
She learned the art of flower arranging while working in the Nelson Greenhouse and Flower Shop business in Mercer, Pa. She enjoyed sharing the beauty of flowers, working with fresh and silk flowers, for special occassions, friends, and for Sunday services at the churches she attended.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Nelson, who passed on April 11, 2002, at the age of 78 years.
She is survived by three daughters: Karen (Otis) Jarrett of Lake Wales, Fla.; Barbara (Gary) Cessna of Frewsburg, N.Y., and Staci Bemis (Gary Counts) of Panama, N.Y.
Grandchildren: Troy (Jennifer) Tressler, Patrick (Tonia) Tressler, Mylin (April) Jarrett, Brandon Cessna, Lindsey Dingman, Sarah (Thomas) Zemcik, Joshua Bemis, Alexa (Richard) Sullivan, Delaney Bemis, Kennedy Troyer, Alvin Troyer.
Great-grandchildren were: Aslin (Shawn) Thompson, Cameron Tressler, Ian Tressler, Brittany (Jaime) Moore, Patrick Tressler Jr, Sophia Jarrett, Mylin Jarrett Jr, Elizabeth Bindics, Ethan Cessna, Lilly Dingman, Emily Dingman, Mackenzie Zemcik, Tatem Zemcik, Gavin Zemcik, Christopher Bemis, Killian Sullivan; great-great grandchildren: Aaliyah Thompson, Lynleigh Moore, Bethany Grace Moore, Marlee Moore.
The family is especially grateful to Good Shepard Hospice in Auburndale, Fla., for their caring ministrations.
A private service will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.
