Stephen "Steve" Skidmore

Stephen “Steve” Skidmore, 95, of Southern Pines, passed away on Feb. 27, 2017, at First Health Hospital in Pinehurst.

Born on Aug. 13, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pa., to the late Frank and Emma Skidmore. Steve proudly served as Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. He was a graduate of Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. He worked and retired as a marketing manager for TRW. Steve enjoyed his time traveling for his work and made many friends throughout the country. After moving to Whispering Pines he worked at Pinehurst #7 golf course. Steve served his community and volunteered much of his time with both the Whispering Pines Fire Department and as a volunteer reader for first grade students at Vass Lakeview Elementary School. Steve was known to his many, many friends in the fire department as “Skiddy” and had a fire engine dedicated in his name for his service. He especially enjoyed his time reading to the children who expressed their gratitude to him by the many cards and drawings they made for him.

Steve was also a member of the Jamestown Elks Lodge #263 and a life member of the Lakewood American Legion. He was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church while living in Jamestown serving as a deacon and elder and also as basketball coach and Sunday School teacher.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Ellen MegerleSkidmore; daughter, Gayle Pate (Mike); son, Stephen Skidmore (Anette); four grandchildren, Megerle Morris (Mike), Andrew Pate (Carly), Kaitlin Skidmore, and Sarah Harris (Zack); two great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Lillian Pate.

A memorial service with Military Honors will be held on Sunday, March 5, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. at Gracious Living Chapel 205 SE Service Road Southern Pines with a visitation following from 2-4 p.m. at the Gracious Living Activity Center. A memorial service will be planned at a later date in Jamestown, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Whispering Pines Volunteer Fire Department 16 Hardee Lane Whispering Pines, NC 28327 or Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church 330 S. May Street Southern Pines, NC 28387.
