William A. Hughes
William A. Hughes, 78, of Gaithersburg, Md., passed away Sept. 27, 2016. He was the loving husband of Judy Hughes (Anderson), his wife of 55 years. Born July 24, 1938, in Jamestown, N.Y., to the late William and Catherine (Jones) Hughes. Bill was a wonderful man, a loving husband, father and grandfather. After his beloved family and treasured friends, the other loves of his life were aviation, teaching and pretty much anything to do with cars.
He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1956, Jamestown Community College in 1958, Ohio State University in 1961, and received his master’s in mathematics education from the University of Connecticut in 1969. He taught in Montgomery County schools for 25 years. He then pursued his other career dreams in automotive and aviation repair, and continued teaching part time at Montgomery College. He was still actively working at the time of his passing.
During his life he enjoyed participating in Civil Air Patrol, Air Lifeline, the Congressional Flying Club, NRA and supporting his kid’s clubs such as 4-H and FFA when they were growing up. Bill was always known for putting others first. He loved to help people and will be missed by so many. He will also be missed by all the critters who regularly visited the feeders that he kept stocked for them.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children: Peter Hughes, Marcy Wagner, Mary Kay Behanna and husband, Vernon, Marne Rammling and husband Chris; six grandchildren: Kenny Wagner, Jessi Wagner, Jaclyn Hardy, Cheyenne Hardy, Jack Rammling, and Bailey Rammling; great-granddaughter Eden Wagner; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will take place on Friday, Oct. 7, from 7-9 p.m. at the Roy W. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11a.m. at Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, 23640 Woodfield Road, Gaithersburg. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to any of Bill’s favorite causes. Online condolences may be expressed at www.barberfhlaytonsville.com.
