Louis Michael Thrasher
Louis Michael Thrasher was born in Jamestown, N.Y., on March 9, 1938, the son of James W. Thrasher and Lillian E. Brill. Mr. Thrasher passed away on Aug. 19, 2016, at the Los Angeles VA Center.
He graduated from Alfred University, AB (1960), the University of Cincinnati, Juris Doctor, Order of Coif, (1967) and Harvard University, Master of Public Administration (1974). He was accepted in U.S. Department of Justice Honors Law Graduate Program, assigned to Civil Rights Division as trial attorney (1967-1968), Washington, Attorney-in- Charge, Civil Rights Division Field Office, Los Angeles (1968-1970), deputy chief voting section (1971-1972), Washington, director and associate director special litigation (1972- 1978), and special counsel litigation (1978-1980) Washington. Chief, criminal division, U.S. Attorney’s Office, (1981- 1982) San Francisco; Partner Mattson, Ricketts, Lincoln, Nebraska. He served in U.S. Army as a first lieutenant, 1961-63. He was a recipient of U.S. Attorney General’s Special Commendation Award.
Mr. Thrasher spent his career litigating the legal rights of all Americans to be free from illegal discrimination in the federal courtrooms throughout the United States, and was the trial lawyer in several landmark cases while he was with the Civil Rights Division.
Mr. Thrasher is survived by his daughter, Lisa Thrasher of Washington, D.C.; his sons: Christopher M. Thrasher, Los Angeles and Matthew Thrasher of Columbus, Neb.; two brothers: James Thrasher of Charleston, S.C., and Patrick Thrasher of Boston; and his beloved partner, Doris Kaufman of Los Angeles.
Mr. Thrasher is preceded in death by his sisters: Patricia Anne Thrasher and Sara L. Thrasher.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, at 4 p.m., at Cabot & Sons Funeral Home, 27 Chestnut Street (@Fair Oaks) in Pasadena, CA 91103. Phone (262) 793-7159.
