Etta M. Young
Etta M. Young, 87, of Cross Street, Jamestown, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at her home, in the arms of her loving daughter.
She was born June 26, 1929, in Jamestown, N.Y., the daughter of the late Rev. Julius M. and Daisy Annabell Bryson Young.
She was educated in the Jamestown area and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1947.
Etta worked MRC, Manor Oak as a nurse’s aide and retired from Chautauqua Hardware.
She was an active member of Emmanual Baptist Church, where she was in the choir and Missionary Society. She was also a founder and CEO of Widow’s Mite Society in the 1990-2000s. She earned an Axel Carlson Award in 1996. In 2009, she was presented with The Carolyn Louise Pennamon- Faison Memorial Award for outstanding service on behalf of the Jamestown Juneteenth Planning Committee.
Etta enjoyed puzzles, cooking and baking cookies for family and friends. She loved people and will be remembered for her kindness. She would do anything she could to help others. Her main priority was raising and caring for her family. She was especially proud of her children and grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her four brothers: Richard, Ned, Bootsie and Albert Young; and one sister, Ida Pickett.
She is survived by six sons: Michael Young of Decateur, Ga., Doug Williams of Buffalo, Arnold Williams of Jamestown, David Williams of Jamestown, Jonathan Williams of Jamestown and Martin Williams of Buffalo; two daughters: Daisy Vollrath of Los Angeles, Calif., and Emma Asobie of Buffalo; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Young of Jamestown; five grandsons: Dwight Leeper, Dalacey Wilson, Armando Williams, Andre Hodnett, Antonio Williams; and four great-grandchildren: Kadence Piazza, Kristian Piazza, Trysten Eggleston and Trayce Eggleston. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home, 316 E. Fifth St., Jamestown, N.Y., on Tuesday, July 26, from 6-8 p.m. A visitation will also be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 53 W. 23rd St., Jamestown, on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral at noon. The Rev. Leroy Walker, pastor of the church, will officiate.
