Basil “Bay” J. Spitale
Basil “Bay” J. Spitale, 91, of Jamestown, passed away at 7:02 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 7, 2015) in the Lutheran Retirement Home.
He was born in James-town on March 30, 1924, the son of Carmelo and Josephine Cimino Spitale.
Bay was employed at MRC as an inspector and retired in 1986 after 32 years of service. He was previously employed at Jamestown Veneer & Plywood and Empire Worsted Mills.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and served in Central Europe and Northern France. He earned the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal and on June 10, 2013, he was awarded the insignia of Chevalier of The Legion of Honor by the President of the French Republic. He was a member of the American Legion Henry Mosher Post 658 and the Moose Lodge 1681, South Hills Country Club and was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church.
Bay enjoyed golfing and bowling and his favorite team was the New York Yankees. On March 30, 1939, he became the first member of The Boys Club. In earlier years, he played on the MRC Softball Team.
He is survived by three sons, George (Mary) Spitale, Jamestown, Carl (Dolores) Spitale, Royal Palm Beach, Fla. and Peter Spitale, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; six grandchildren, Kristen Wilson and Scott Spitale, Jamestown, Alyssa Spitale, Phoenix, Ariz., Carl and Michael Spitale, Lakewood, Calif. and Sarah Darville, Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Wilson, James-town, and Olivia and Tyler Darville, Royal Palm Beach, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Campesi Spitale, whom he married on Sept. 7, 1942, in St. James Catholic Church, and who died on Sept. 14, 2015. They were married for 73 years. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Benjamin, James, Anthony and Dominic Spitale, and by two sisters, Angeline Spitale and Lilly Bonfiglio.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, in St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Darrell G. Duffy, pastor, will be the celebrant.
Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Friends will be received on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. in the Hubert Funeral Home and Cremation Services. A Christian wake Service will be held at 6:45 p.m.
