Charles W. Weis
Charles W. Weis, 75, formerly of Erie and Findley Lake, N.Y., passed away Friday, March 6, 2015, at Pleasant Ridge Manor West, where he had resided for the past several years.
Born in Erie, Pa., on Dec. 16, 1939, he was a son of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Gleeson) Weis.
A graduate of Cathedral Prep, class of 1957, Chuck received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Gannon College. He held a Masters of Social Work from Ford-ham University, and pursued his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University.
Chuck served as executive director of Family Services of Warren County and previously, was team leader for Family Based Mental Health at Northwest Human Development. He held many community leadership positions including clinical social worker for the VA Medical Center in Erie, CEO of Family Services of James-town, owner of Human Services Professional Consultants and director of Chemical dependence units at Hamot Hospital and Kent Community Hospital in Michigan. In addition, he served as commissioner of Mental Health for Chautauqua County, N.Y., and was the executive director of the Lake County Center on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in Painesville, Ohio.
Chuck taught social work and sociology courses at Gannon University, and authored numerous publications on chemical dependence and mental health to-pics. These included a book, ”Diversion of the Public Inebriate from the Criminal Justice System.”
He was a member of the Irish Heritage Society and the Warren Lions Club. Chuck was a longtime member of St. Mathias Church, where he served as a lector and president of parish council. His favorite pastimes included swimming, tennis, listening to classical music, sailing and world travel. Chuck was fluent in Spanish.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Weis; and a sister, Nancy McCallion.
Survivors include the love of his life and 50-year companion, his wife, Carole (Spencer) Weis; three daughters: Susannah Weis Frigon, husband, Curt, of Fairview, Sarah Weis Humphrey, husband, Todd, of Fairview, and Ruthanne Weis Casale, husband, Tom, of Ennis, Mont.; a son, Charles Spencer Weis of Erie; two brothers: Gerard Weis, wife Shirley, and John Weis, wife Gloria; four sisters: Mary Margaret Weis, Carol Allgeier, husband, Ed, Janet Corritore, husband, Lee, and Patty Weidner, husband, Lee; six grandchildren: Emily, Luke and Sam Frigon and Gabriella, Olivia and Brendan Humphrey; a sister-in-law, Gail Tavana, husband, Dr. Manoucher Tavana; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th St., at Greengarden Boulevard, and may attend a prayer service there Mon-day at 8:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Matthias Church in French Creek, N,Y,m at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Matthias Cemetery.
