James Levi “Sleep” Redington
RANDOLPH, N.Y. – James Levi “Sleep” Red-ington, 92, of 223 Main St,, Randolph, formerly of 11 Borden St,, passed away Sunday, Sept, 14, 2014, in the Lutheran Home and Rehab Center in Jamestown.
He was born July 26, 1922, in Port Allegany, Pa., the fifth of six children of the late Levi and Alta Mae Holsmer Redington.
Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Randolph, and had previously worked as the meat manager for the former Market Basket in Randolph.
Jim graduated from Port Allegany High School, and prior to enlisting, he was employed by Pierce Glass Company. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a radio operator from Nov. 6, 1942 to Oct. 11, 1945 with the Second Signal Service Battalion. He fought in campaigns in northern France, central Europe and the Rhineland.
He was a member of the Randolph American Legion Post 181, where he served as past commander, a life-member of the Randolph Fire Company, where he was a former captain with the Randolph Rescue Squad, the Randolph Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 6533, a former member of the East Randolph Fire Department, where he served as chief and was a member of the Liberty Lodge 505 Free and Ac-cepted Masons and Coudersport Consistory.
He was an accomplished musician with the ability to play any instrument that he picked up. He derived the most pleasure from playing the organ and was able to play any song that was requested, as long as he knew it, he played by ear, not by reading music.
Jim was very athletic. He was on the high school football and swimming teams and in later years, he also enjoyed also playing softball and bowled in the former Bernie Hinman Memorial at Twi Lite Lanes in Randolph. He was an avid sportsman and loved fishing and hunting with his sons and grandsons. He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Louise Larson Redington, whom he married in Kansas City, Mo., while serving in the U.S. Army, and with whom he celebrated his 71st wedding anniversary on March 20, 2014; two sons: Douglas Redington and wife, Cathy of Randolph, and Gary Redington and companion, Peggy Cradduck of Olean; two daughters: Cathy Digirolamo of Las Vegas, and Peggy John of Youngsville, N.C.; seven grandchildren: Stephanie Jaquay and Adam (Maria) Jaquay of Las Vegas, Jessica (Michael) Winder of Nescopeck, Pa., Stacie Hebner and Denny (Laura) John of Youngsville, N.C., Joshua (Haleigh) Redington of Maple Valley, Wash., and John “JD” (Liza Milbrandt) Redington of Salamanca; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by two infant sons; sisters: Mary Lohman, Virginia Ovlatt and Marjorie Benson; brothers: Lawrence and Harry Redington; and a son-in-law, Nick Digirolamo.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 18, 2014), in the VanRensselaer & Son Funeral Home, 14 Church St., Randolph, from where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday. Chaplain Randall Honey will officiate. Burial will follow in the Randolph Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted by the Randolph American Legion Post 181. The Randolph Fire Company will conduct a memorial service at 6:45 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
