Carl E. Berger
DEWITTVILLE – Carl E. Berger, 84, of 7286 Beech Hill Road, Dewittville, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, in his home.
Carl was born Dec. 19, 1929, in New Washington, Ohio, a son of Rudolph and Clara (Magsig) Berger.
Upon graduation from New Washington High School, Carl joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and studied to be a boiler man and an electrician. After the war, Carl worked in factories as an electrician, but aspired to farm his own farm.
In 1956, he married Joyce Marie Pember, and began farming in Helena, Ohio. In 1970, Carl and Joyce moved, with their five children to the “Battle Hill Farm” outside of Dewittville, N.Y., to build a dairy farm. At age 67 he began driving for CARTS until the age of 81.
Carl had the biggest heart. He loved people and had a special place in his heart for children and animals. He helped people in any way he could and always had time for his neighbors. He loved his family very much and treasured the times we gathered.
He was a leader of St. Mark Lutheran Church for more than 40 years. Also, he was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Loyal Order of the Moose.
When he retired from dairy farming, he continued raising beef cattle and built a house using the wood from his land, help from his friends and his “mechanical ingenuity.”
Carl is survived by his wife and five children: Chuck (Charlotte) Berger of Willingboro, N.J., Jean Berger of Helena, Ohio, Amy (Robert) Huston of Hudson, Ohio, Sheryl (Jeff) Ridgley of Lebanon, Ohio and Mary Kay (Randy) Atlas of Buffalo, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Art Berger of Attica, Ohio, and Rudolph (Leona) Berger of Bucyrus, Ohio.
He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Kermit, Richard, and Robert; and one granddaughter.
The funeral service will be held at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Mayville, on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Visitation will be held at Freay Funeral Home in Mayville on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014 from 2-4 p.m., and 7-9 p.m.
