By The Associated Press 1 min read
Gov. Kathy Hochul is pictured signing legislation Wednesday making it a Class A misdemeanor for failure to safely store rifles, shotguns or firearms when accessible by a minor or prohibited person.

Democrat Kathy C. Hochul won election Tuesday as governor of New York, defeating Republican Bruce A. Blakeman. This is Hochul’s second time being elected governor. She was serving as lieutenant governor when Andrew Cuomo resigned in 2021, and she ascended to take his place. She won her first full term the following year. Blakeman is the Nassau County executive. The Associated Press declared Hochul the winner at 9:00 p.m. EST.

Early returns, according to the state Board of Elections website, show Hochul with a 66% to 32.8% lead over Blakeman.

Incumbent Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli leads 68.5% to 26.68% over challenger Joseph Hernandez with 6,715 of 13,187 districts reporting statewide.

Attorney General Letitia James, with 6,791 of 13,187 districts reporting, has earned 65.12% of the vote while challenger Saritha Komatireddy has won 32.76 % of the vote.

In Chautauqua County, Bruce Blakeman is leading Hochul 16,600 to 12,033 with a little more than half of the county’s voting districts reporting. DiNapoli narrowly leads Hernandez in county voting, 14,182 to 14,103 while Komatireddy leads James in Chautauqua County, 15,863 to 12,471.

Local results in the governor’s election will be posted as they come in from the Chautauqua County Board of Elections.
