Demolition of a former flower shop at 1519 Washington St. began Wednesday.
The former Girton’s Flowers and Gifts is being converted into a parking lot and storage facility for a local company, according to the demolition contractor.
"JMI bought the property, and it is being converted into a parking lot and storage area for the company," said Jim Rauh, owner and proprietor of Rauh Enterprises.
According to Jamestown Macadam, Inc.’s Facebook page, JMI is a family-owned municipal and construction supply company that has served Western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania since 1970. JMI’s Washington Street space is home to its municipal and construction supply retail store, which the company says has more than 200,000 items available.
Girton's Flowers and Gifts closed in 2023 when the business' owner retired. JMI purchased the lot in 2022 for $195,000.
More demolition is occurring just one street away. The building next to the former M & M Sporting Den store, which closed in 2024, is located at 808 N. Main St. and is currently undergoing various stages of demolition.
"I'm not sure who's doing that demolition," said Rauh. "It's in various stages of being torn down."
