Budget season is fast approaching for the city of Jamestown, and during the next City Council work session a resolution is planned to come before the council in regards to the budget.
Mayor Kim Ecklund is giving the council and city residents a sneak peak. In her words, "It's not pretty."
During Monday's council work session, Ecklund discussed the planned upcoming resolution and the next steps as they head towards budget season, with the planned budget presentation date being October 8.
"Next week you will see a resolution come before you that is a little early in the budget process," Ecklund said. "For new council members, you're not aware that in the past we've tried when we get into budget season to look at expenses that are still available through this year's budget to offset some capital things in next year's."
For 2026, Ecklund said she meets daily with Erika Thomas, city comptroller, and that there are no glaring issues and the city is staying on track with the 2026 budget. There have been some budget amendments that have come before the council, and Ecklund said some more will most likely come before the end of the year, but things are staying in line with the budget.
For 2027, Thomas has started reviewing months ago and Ecklund said they will be starting up the second review and changes.
"Erika did it with all of the department heads up until me, with my guidance," Ecklund said. "I have met with every department head once, and we are going back a second time to get in front of them with some changes and some cuts. It's not pretty. Escalated costs, as you are all aware, just to give you a heads up, we're looking at almost half a million in gas alone."
There are some big things to look at in overview, Ecklund said, adding that while she is not sure where it will end up, every department head will be tasked with taking another look. The release is expected from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on October 8 in the conference room of city hall, but that time has not been finalized yet and Ecklund said she will let council know the exact time.
