The loss of former councilman Tony Dolce in July was felt across the city, and a few city residents have approached the City Council during Monday's voting session about the possibility of naming something after him.
Fulton Street resident Paul Wolff approached the council during Monday's meeting saying that the loss of Dolce was a big loss for the city, adding that one of the last things Dolce did for Fulton Street was to have a light pole installed, which has been a big help on the street. He asked council members if it would be possible to have a memorial for Dolce placed, such as a sign on the recently placed pole.
"He and I butted heads a lot, but I realize he really looked out for our community," Wolff said.
Another resident of the neighborhood, Raven Corvus, seconded Wolff's request. She said they are getting a lot of compliments with the new street light on the corner of Fulton Street, and it has made things on the corner a lot quieter. Corvus said if a memorial sign was placed on that pole on the corner, she would keep an eye on it.
"Tony really was a great guy, and he really did care," Corvus said. "He would come to the house, he would call or email me if I had problems. You just don't find that a lot in politics anymore. I'd send an email and a few minutes later he would be on the phone with me, addressing my concerns."
Another city resident, Doug Champ, also had suggestions, saying that rather than a memorial on a pole, the city could name the city municipal building after Dolce. Champ said this is something he has seen happen before with other people who have passed.
"I suggest we name this building the Anthony Dolce Municipal Building," Champ said. "There have been other people I have worked with whose names have been put on buildings when they died. Rather than a pole, why not this building? I can't think of another person who has spent more time in it than he did."
