For many in the Jamestown community, Eric Herman is a familiar face.
Whether he’s serving as captain of the Jamestown Fire Department, organizing community events like Community Through Hockey, or encouraging others to be their best, Herman has built a reputation for service, resilience, and leading by example.
Now, he’s adding another accomplishment to an already impressive list.
Recently, Herman traveled to Akron, Ohio, to compete in his first-ever Firefighter Challenge. This is a grueling competition designed to simulate the demanding tasks firefighters face in real emergency situations. Competitors race against the clock while wearing full protective gear, completing events such as climbing stairs with a high-rise hose pack, hoisting equipment, performing forcible entry simulations, advancing charged hose lines, and dragging a 160-pound rescue mannequin known as “Randy.”
Despite being a first-time competitor, Herman finished second in the region and third overall.
He also thanked his family for their unwavering support and expressed appreciation to the firefighters of Erie Firefighters IAFF Local 293, who welcomed him as one of their own, trained alongside him, and gave him the opportunity to compete as part of their team.
The competition in Akron was only the beginning. Herman has already turned his focus toward the Firefighter Challenge National Championships in Erie, Pa., determined to continue improving and chase a new personal record.
In July 2023, Herman experienced a life-changing incident while responding to a fire after being called in off duty. During the operation, he fell through a wall and into a burned-out stairwell, plunging from the second floor of a burning home into the basement below. Remarkably, he got up and walked away without serious injury.
Rather than allowing the experience to define him, Herman embraced it as a reminder of how precious life is. Since that day, he has adopted the phrase “Lucky To Be Here,” words that have become both a personal motto and a reflection of his perspective on life.
Following the competition, Herman reflected on the experience with gratitude.
“I competed in my first ever Firefighter Challenge, entered a tattoo contest and met a lot of like-minded, driven people,” he shared. “After three days, I came home with some hardware, some fun stories and a new desire to be better than yesterday.”
