Spike in water violations reported

By Gregory Bacon 3 min read

MAYVILLE - Water violations of businesses and organizations that operate on private wells in the county appear to be on the rise.

During the recent Chautauqua County Board of Health meeting, it was reported there were 18 businesses that were fined for missing various deadlines on various water reports.

Jessica Wuerstle with the county Health Department, said the increase may be due to a lab some businesses use. "There's been a change in a local business. The lab that has been hired by a lot of facilities, there's been a change of ownership of that lab," she said.

Wuerstle said it appears at least some of the facilities believed the lab was going to send the reports, but it didn't.

At the end of the day, Wuerstle said it's the business' responsibility to make sure reports are sent. "We don't go after a lab. If a lab missed a report, we go after the operator to cite the operator because ultimately it is the operator to be following up with their lab to make sure results are submitted to us," she said.
