Work by the state has been ongoing for months on East Second Street, and so far the project remains on track to be finished by the end of the year.

City Council members had some questions about the project that were asked during a recent work session. .

A question was raised for Director of Public Works, Mark Roetzer, on the ongoing project by Councilman Brent Sheldon, R-Ward 1. Sheldon said that the project is a state Department of Transportation project, but asked about plans for the replacement of things that were dug up such as sidewalks and intersections.

"They're slowly working down the street," Roetzer said. "They are working on replacing them. I know they're still going to replace all of those signals, so the reason why some of the intersections in particular haven't been completed is that there might be signal work left to do at those intersections."

Concrete work has begun, Roetzer added. Sheldon said a lot of residents have been walking in the streets because they are unable to walk on the sidewalks. He added he hoped it would get fixed before the beginning of school, and Roetzer said workers have been there basically every day, adding that there have been struggles getting concrete this summer.

"I know everybody is also having trouble getting concrete this summer," Roetzer said. "There's a lot of big projects going on. We at the city too are having trouble. We're having to schedule concrete trucks pretty far out."

It is still expected that the Second Street project will be finished by the end of the year.

Other Public Works related projects and issues were also discussed with the council, including the planned dredging project by Jones and Gifford Avenue.

Councilman Daniel Gonzalez, D-At Large and chair of the Public Works Committee, brought some of the items discussed during their committee before the overall work session. The dredging project has been brought up by council multiple times in the past, and work is hoped to be finished by the fall of 2029.

"Right now we're looking at the funds being cleared for engineering services then we're at that part right now," Gonzalez said. "Next year we're looking to hopefully start the actual work."

General discussion for the committee also included manhole covers, as a resident approached them with an issue. The committee is looking for solutions for them and for a few other manhole covers around the city.
