Southwestern and Frewsburg shared eight combined sports teams in 2025-26. This year, they'll make it an even 10.
The districts' school boards have approved the additional sharing of modified boys soccer and modified football teams. Practices and games will be hosted at Southwestern.
Southwestern and Frewsburg shared junior varsity and varsity football, varsity competition cheerleading, varsity girls tennis, varsity boys and girls bowling, varsity girls wrestling, varsity boys swimming (along with Falconer and Jamestown), varsity boys tennis and varsity girls flag football.
In his report to the board in advance of the Aug. 11 Southwestern board meeting, Kevin Salisbury, Southwestern athletics director, said Frewsburg anticipated having five players interested in modified boys soccer players interested in playing while Southwestern had 22 players signed up. Southwestern had two coaches while Frewsburg was still looking for a modified boys soccer coach.
Frewsburg anticipated having 13 players for seventh and eighth grade football while Southwestern had 28 players signed up. Southwestern had three coaches and Frewsburg had two board-approved coaches. The modified football format will allow students who don't play much during the regular game to play in a fifth quarter with schools who also have students who don't play much in the regular game.
"In closing, I would again like to thank you for your support of shared athletics with Frewsburg," Salisbury wrote in his report to the board. "I have had the privilege to coach various sports at Southwestern over the past 26 years and was involved with our shared football program last season, and can say, without question the benefits far outweigh the negatives for the kids in both districts."
