Over the past month, work has continued forward with the Board of Public Utilities' fiber network project, and at the BPU's August meeting General Manager Kris Sellstrom reported they have reached the final design phase for the underground work.
"We have been busy with the fiber project, getting that rolling forward," Sellstrom said. "We do have final design for the underground work downtown. I think we eliminated 95% of the conduit that was going to be installed by leveraging our existing conduits."
There are also some key areas where Sellstrom said they would be utilizing overhead electricity where that already exists. Other projects for the month that Sellstrom reported on to the board includes continuing to wait on parts for the trickling filter with the hope for that to be installed in the next couple of weeks. Not much is happening generational wise in the power plant right now, as Sellstrom said the gas turbine is still out for overhaul. A Google Maps type tour of the power plant is also now available.
"I don't know if anyone wants to see a full, three-dimensional Google Maps type tour of the entire power plant, we now have that," Sellstrom said. "It's pretty interesting."
One other item of note for this month's BPU meeting is the approval of a resolution of what Sellstrom said was the first resolution for the BPU's Power Up New York grant. The resolution was for the installation of 4,536 new electrical ducts in the industrial park area. The project received five bids and was given to Dirt Worx Excavating. Sellstrom noted their schedule looks good.
