MAYVILLE - There's been quite a difference at Lakeside Park in the last three months.
In April, Mayville village trustees had expressed great concern about the work being done at the park, questioning the quality and time it was taking to complete it.
Rock of WNY, which is based in Westfield, was awarded the contract, which was originally for $399,000.
The company had put in some change orders, in part due to some railroad ties and ash they uncovered when doing the work. In April the board was given around $88,000 of change orders. In May filed another $40,000 worth of change orders but that work had been done in the fall.
In April and May, village officials were critical of the paperwork as well as how the project was looking before it was completed.
Mayor Rick Syper emphasized to wait until the project was completed before passing judgment. He also said he was going to have the village's Department of Public Works Director work with Rock of WNY.
In June, the village officials did not have any criticism but added they expected the paving would need to be done by June 30 or the company would be fined $1,500 a day.
At the July village board meeting, Syper said Rock of WNY met the required deadlines. There is still additional work that needs to be done, including site furnishings which had been ordered but hadn't come in yet to be installed.
In the end, Syper was satisfied with the work.
"I think a lot of people are happy with the new look. ... I think it really enhances the Chautauqua Belle area," he said.
Trustee Mark Perry agreed.
"From where we were, the work really came along," he said.
The next phase for the Lakeside Park project is for a kayak launch to be installed. The village had gone out to bid previously. On Tuesday, the village extended the bid, saying a company had contacted them and needed extra time.
The kayak launch, improvements at the Belle, and walking paths in the park were all part of a $675,000 state grant the village was awarded in December, 2022. The village was also given $50,000 from the Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Development and Mayville committed to spend $175,000 as a match, bringing the total to $900,000.
