Molitor recognizes 200 years of The Post-Journal

Newsgathering organizations play a vital role in keeping readers informed.

New York State Assemblyman Andrew Molitor R-Westfield, recently congratulated Post-Journal Publisher Michael Bird honoring the newspaper’s 200th anniversary.

“We know how vital the news is to our democratic republic,” Molitor said.

“We are proud to receive this proclamation from Assemblyman Molitor,” Bird added.

The proclamation noted that:

“It’s why freedom of the press is in our First Amendment to the Constitution, but the Post Journal is a special place in our hearts, because of all that it’s done for our community. Without it, we wouldn’t be here. We wouldn’t have good local news. We wouldn’t know what’s going on with our neighbors, and we really appreciate them, and we’re thankful.”

The paper was first published on June 21, 1826. It was known then as the Jamestown Journal. The paper made its debut as a semi-weekly, 56-column newspaper. Publisher Adolphus Fletcher printed the paper on the second floor of his shop. In 1870, the Jamestown Journal transitioned from a weekly publication to a daily publication – The Jamestown Daily Journal. In 1941, The Jamestown Daily Journal merged with the Morning Post to become the Jamestown Post-Journal, now The Post-Journal.

“The proclamation solidifies our determination over the span of 200 years to provide our local community with local news and information they can trust,” Bird noted. “We appreciate the work Assemblymen Molitor does on a daily basis for our community in representing us in the state of New York. We look forward to another 200 years in representing our community and providing news information.”

A special section commemorating 200 years of coverage of the community and world events is included in this weekend’s edition.
