The Department of Development’s Hands On Neighborhoods clean up day is coming up on May 16, and City Development Director discussed with city council during their most recent work session about how to register for that and what all that entails.

Surdyk said Hands On Neighborhoods is an annual event, with quite a few people already signed up for it for this year.

“We will be meeting in Tracey Plaza at 8 a.m. on May 16,” Surdyk said. “We also are offering another registration location on the Riverwalk this year, so if folks want to do the kayak thing and actually pull some stuff out of the water, we’ve noticed in the past there’s a lot of stuff in the water and some people like to kayak.”

Typically, the focus for the clean up is on downtown, but a lot of people like to do the Riverwalk as well. Surdyk said people can indicate where they would like to be when they register.

“It can be your own neighborhood, it can be wherever you would like to go,” Surdyk said. “Just indicate where you would like to go and we’ll make sure you get all of the supplies that you need and you can go off into your neighborhood. The important thing is knowing where it’s going to be.”

If they know where the cleanup is happening, Surdyk said workers for the Department of Public Works and Board of Public Utilities can go around and make sure they get the garbage bags cleaned up afterwards.

Registration for Hands on Neighborhoods is available at chqlandbank.org/hands-on-neighborhoods.
