Dedicated To His Family: Borrello Recognizes The Late Peter Carlo On Senate Floor

Pete Carlo

Peter Carlo of Jamestown passed away in November, but on Wednesday the proud Korean War veteran’s star shone one more time on the floor of the state Senate.

Senators took time during Thursday’s session to discuss J1711, a resolution celebrating the courage and bravery of New York’s Korean War veterans and recognized those who served during the Korean War. Borrello used his time to honor Carlo, who was also a cousin of Borrello’s.

“Peter Carlo, who passed away a few months ago at the age of 94, a Korean War veteran and a man so dedicated to his family and community,” Borrello said. “He distributed over 300 American flags. If there was a building or school or place that did not have an American flag, Peter Carlo made sure that they did. And every year on Memorial Day he made sure that every single veterans’ grave had an American flag placed on Memorial Day to honor their service and sacrifice.”

Carlo was a life member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans, even holding a position with the State of NY. Additionally, he was a Moose member, a Knight of Columbus, and established the Cub Pack 95 with the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout Master. On his own accord, Peter attained over 300 flags from Washington D.C. and distributed them to clubs, schools, legions and churches. After returning from Korea, Carlo was the co-owner of Carlo’s Market, which then became Boniwood Plaza, he also spent many years employed by Jamestown Finishes.

Carlo and his wife didn’t miss a Memorial Day Parade for 63 years. In addition to veterans’ causes, Carlo volunteered at The Resource Center following the passing of his daughter. The city man also negotiated a Peace Mass for Chautauqua County at the Allen Park band shell. He sent letters to all denominations and brought faiths together from all around Western New York. For this, he was awarded the volunteer fellow of the year with the Knights of Columbus.

The Christmas spirit was embodied through Peter’s energy, too. Playing Santa for over 30 years, he made appearances at countless stores, veterans clubs, nursing homes, and businesses. His wife played Mrs. Claus and, together, they were the fan favorites of the Christmas parade for ten years.

“He was a great American, wounded in combat, who came back and became a successful business owner,” Borrello said. “He gave back to so many of our great American veterans. God bless Peter Carlo and his family and God bless those that served our United States Armed Forces.”
