Jamestown Taking Over Parcels With Homeless Squatters
A dozen parcels in the city of Jamestown that are currently owned by Chautauqua County are being transferred to the city so they can be cleaned up and remove homeless people staying there.
The parcels were owned by Kristie White but were foreclosed on by the county after the taxes were not paid on them.
The addresses of the parcels are as follows: 60 W. 14th St.; 32 W. 17th St.; two additional parcels on West 17th St.; two parcels on West 15th St.; one parcel on Isabella Ave.; two parcels on Monroe St.; and three parcels on Clinton St.
The county legislature approved the transfer at its monthly meeting. The resolution was discussed the week before in committee.
“There were several vacant lots in there but there are also two or three residential buildings involved as well,” explained Todd Button, county deputy finance director.
Button noted the county foreclosed on the property following court action. After the county took possession the city of Jamestown expressed interest in the property.
“I believe these are located somewhere near the Riverwalk area in Jamestown, and in a part of town that, because of the status of the buildings, have a lot of either squatters in them of homeless people, or they’re being rented out subpar,” he said.
Button said Jamestown wants to clean up the properties, remove the homeless encampments, and enhance the development of that part of the city.
As part of the transfer agreement, Button said the city of Jamestown has paid the county all interest penalties and taxes.
The back taxes and penalties total $31,331.
The resolution to transfer the parcels was unanimously approved.
