FALCONER – It’s moving through the air that attracts Erinn Sluga to the floor exercise.

Erinn, a member of Flyers Gymnastics, has been a gymnast for about 14 years.

“I like doing the tumbling,” Erinn said as she was about to begin warming up. “It’s just fun to do the flips and everything.”

Erinn said that the most difficult part of the floor exercise is getting enough height when executing her flips. If she doesn’t get enough height, sticking the landing proves to be more difficult.

But aside from the floor exercise, Erinn competes on the uneven parallel bars, vault, and the balance beam.

And she said that the beam is her least favorite event.

But overall, Erinn said gymnastics makes her happy, and she brings her happiness to her practices.

“I like coming here and seeing my friends,” Erinn said.

And through her time with the Flyers Erinn has made many friends.

“And then the sport, in general, I like doing it, and it keeps you active, and it’s fun,” Erinn added.

The 17-year-old said that she practices on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, for about two hours each session.

And while at practice, Erinn gets a chance to hone her routines, and maybe learn a new skill in each of her events.

Erinn will head to the Oncenter in Syracuse April 24-26, for the state competition.

“Throughout Erinn’s career, she’s persevered through medical challenges and mental blocks to become the successful gymnast she is today,”said her Coach Mara Marsh. “Erinn is always the first to cheer on her teammates and they all admire her for that. She’s a great friend and hard worker both in the gym and in the classroom. Flyers wish Erinn the best of luck in all she does in her next step in life.”

Marsh is in her ninth year of coaching at the Flyers, and is an Instructional Class coach, head Xcel team coach, and assistant compulsory coach. She is a USA Gymnastics (USAG) instructor member, is safety certified, CPR and first aid certified. Mara was a Flyers competitive gymnast, is a graduate of SUNY Fredonia with a degree in communications. Mara also helps with Flyers Facebook.

After Erinn graduates from Randolph Central School in June, she plans to attend Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa., to study interior architecture design.

And when Erinn is not practicing gymnastics, she plays the tuba.
