A local business that has been serving the area for over 60 years is once again being recognized for sales and services.
With eight previous recognitions, Schutt’s Saw and Mower is continuing to nationally rank as one of the best Cub Cadet and Hustler sale locations.
The award is given each year to a few of the 2500-3000 Cub Cadet and Hustler dealers in the nation that present best in terms of brand recognition and sales. Co-Owner Dan Schutt said that the award is based on things such as presentation of the products, the service department, and overall performance of the dealership. Out of the top 100 dealerships in the nation Schutt stated that the location is Jamestown ranked 65, showing how truly big of an impact something from a small place can have.
“And the thing that makes it a little more special for us is we’re just a single store family business. Many of these other dealerships have anywhere from three stores to 15 dealerships. So all their numbers are combining to get this award,” said Schutt. “We’re doing it with one store in Jamestown, New York.”
The business was initially opened in 1960 by Schutt’s grandfather, run out of his home on Falconer Street before eventually moving in 1962 to a location on Work Street in Falconer. Though a long time staple of mower and lawn care sales in the area, Schutt stated that picking up the Cub Cadet line would help the business to take off in 2002. Schutt stated that the line has helped the business to grow nearly seven to eight times volume today.
“I have a couple of sons here, I have a nephew here, and I have a couple hired guys that aren’t related but we’re still mostly a family business. We really emphasize service and value every customer,” said Schutt. “We like to think our customers are our friends. We like to build relationships and friendships with our customers. We really enjoy everybody and are very thankful for them because without them, of course, we can’t do this.”
Schutt stated that, when located at 685 Fairmount Avenue, the business would be approached by a Cub Cadet sales representative that was interested in finding a new dealer for the area. At the time, Schutt’s lease was about to expire and the future of the location was unknown making it impossible for the business to accept the offer. One year later, once the business had relocated to the Hazeltine Avenue location in 2002, the same representative would walk in and propose the same offer to Schutt once again. Schutt had feelings of doubts about being able to reach the high expectations of the company at first, due to the massive amount of inventory and the predicted sales being nearly four times what the company was doing at that time. Despite this, Schutt stated that the business would go on to sell double that estimate that same year, with company growth only continuing to surge from that point on.
“We’re just extremely grateful for the support of the community. You know this will be our 66th year in business. And we really appreciate it because it’s hard being a small business because people want to run to Home Depot and all the other stores to buy the products we sell, which they don’t get the same service we provide,” said Schutt. “So we’re thankful for the people that recognize that we bring value to their purchase, because we take care of them.”
