Demolition Possible For JCC Annex Building

Jamestown Community College Buildings and Grounds committee gave an update on The Annex Building located on Second Street.

Committee member Lou DiPalma asked if the sale of the building was at a standstill, and Karen Fuller-Markham, JCC vice president of finance and operations, said the sale was at a standstill. Fuller-Markham said JCC had extended its agreement with a real estate agent, with the agreement to expire May 3. The committee may look at other options after May 3.

“Our attempt to sell it was our first choice, with the understanding that there’s substantial cost attached to a demolition,” JCC President Dr. Daniel DeMarte said.

In a Dec. 9, 2024 Post-Journal article, then Interim Vice President/Finance and Operations Kathleen Dennison said when JCC attempted to move forward demolishing the building, the state Office of Historical Preservation opposed the plan.

“It is unlikely that we will ever be given approval to demolish it,” she said in 2024.

At that time Dennison requested permission from the county Planning Board to redirect the funds it was given for demolition and instead use them to cover their costs for asbestos abatement, which is required if the college sells the building.

DeMarte said that demolition may not be off the table. He said he has learned that the Office of Historic Preservation is not necessarily an obstacle. Depending on the outcome with the current real estate agent contract, he said the B&G panel may revisit the demolition conversation.

In a related matter, DeMarte said after a failed attempt to sell the north county campus in fall of 2025, it is again on the market.

“Since it’s gone up, there has been plenty of interest. The (JCC) Foundation has two verbal offers, nothing in writing yet, but they’re working on it,” DeMarte said.

He added that the potential buyers are local, but could not provide any more information.

Starting at $3.50/week.
