MAYVILLE – A fire broke out at a residence near Chautauqua Lake Central School that has been cited for numerous code violations.

The North Lake and Chautauqua fire departments reported on their Facebook pages that around 7:30 a.m. Monday they were dispatched to a reported chimney fire on Beaujean Road in the Town of Chautauqua. While enroute, the fire was reported to be extending into the ceiling.

There were no reported injuries and the fire was successfully under control with some mutual aid released by 9:15 a.m.

Chautauqua Town Supervisor Don Emhardt confirmed that the fire broke out at 7127 Beaujean Road, the location of a property that has been the subject of numerous complaints by neighbors.

Emhardt said the main residence was not damaged, but rather one of the outbuildings that caught fire.

A cause of the fire was not announced but Emhardt said the structure “is not a code compliant building.”

There have been at least two other fires on the property in the last couple of years.

Last month, Chautauqua town officials announced they were successful in state Supreme Court to permit the town to clean up the property after the owners failed to do so. The cost of the cleanup will be billed to the owner. If the bill is not paid it will be added to the property taxes.

Emhardt said they have begun advertising for bids and hope to have the work done in May.

Back in 2023 when neighbors first began complaining about the property, there had been a large number of people living there in tents, campers and other outbuildings. Emhardt said it appears there are only two people living on the property now, one in the main house and one in this outbuilding.
