WACS Mulls Action On Suspended Teacher

WESTFIELD — Westfield Academy and Central Schools may be moving toward a decision against a recently suspended teacher.

During its last school board meeting, board President Wendy Dyment asked fellow members to approve a motion to enter executive session to consider 3020-a charges against a tenured teacher, “which may lead to discipline, including suspension, or removal of the tenured teacher.” The board approved the motion, noting that no action was anticipated following the executive session.

This action was the first indication that the district could be looking to cut ties with the employee.

In early November, the Board of Education entered into an executive session to discuss matters relating to employment histories “of a particular person or persons” before the regular meeting of the board.

Later, on social media, the district put out this statement: “Westfield Academy and Central School District is aware of recent claims regarding a current staff member.

“The safety, well-being, and trust of our students and alumni remain our highest priority. We take any allegation of misconduct seriously and are committed to maintaining the highest ethical and professional standards among all staff members.”

On Nov. 13, former Westfield Chief of Police Gregory Wozneak posted a statement saying that the Police Department is aware of the allegations and that there is an active investigation into the matter. However, according to the post, “no victims have come forward to file any reports of criminal activity.”

At the Nov. 10 board meeting, two individuals addressed the board. One asked if the individual in question was still working at the school and the other asked about student safety. “At that time, I reiterated that if they would like to meet or talk to discuss it, to reach out to my office,” Superintendent Ryan Sikorski said.
