New restaurant proposed at Jamestown airport
Perhaps the third time is the charm.
For the third time in three years, a new restaurant is being proposed at the Jamestown airport.
A public hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 28 at 6:35 p.m. at the Chautauqua County Legislative Chambers in Mayville for Archies Airport Diner, LLC to rent the airport space.
Archies Airport Diner is seeking a one-year lease beginning March 1, with the option to renew at the end of the term. The business will be charged $900 a month.
In November 2024, Basil & Bones, a catering company, was seeking to expand operations and signed a six-month lease for $400 a month, with the option for a lease extension with an increase in rent. At the time, county officials said Basil & Bones was looking to have a traditional restaurant there, but apparently decided against it once its lease was up.
Before Basil & Bones, Studio Catering D had been leasing the restaurant. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in April, 2023 but they left in September that same year. They were paying $500 a month.
While they were still doing catering from the airport, they were also offering “grab and go” lunch service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
One of the challenges for a restaurant there is that there are no commercial flights flying in or out of Jamestown. Jamestown has been without commercial air service since 2018.
When there were commercial flights out of Jamestown, the Tarmac Cafe had been at the airport but it left in September 2016 after doing business there for three years.
Chautauqua County has been working with a consultant to see if commercial air service can be brought back to Jamestown.
The last update provided to the full legislature was in December 2024.
Since then a new manager, John Machemer, has been hired for the Jamestown and Dunkirk airports. In July he said that the consultants were still pursuing commercial air service but had nothing new to report.
No description was given by Machemer to county lawmakers regarding how Archies Airport Diner would operate when he requested the public hearing be set. The legislature scheduled the public hearing during its December meeting.
