BEMUS POINT – Randy Apperson has been a fixture in the Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department.

At the most recent Bemus Point Village Board meeting, village officials took time to recognize Apperson’s contributions to the department as the chief prepares to retire.

Apperson was recognized at the most recent meeting, with a proclamation from village Mayor Jeffrey Molnar. While presenting the proclamation, Molnar noted that Apperson has dedicated countless hours to the department, and ensured smooth operations within. Molnar stated that, upon fire entering the position of chief, Apperson had many large hills that he would overcome. The first challenge for Apperson was helping to assist the department in the transition from Basic Life Support ambulances to Advanced Life Support ambulances. This allows the ambulance to perform more intensive care techniques and treat people in more critical conditions. The second challenge Apperson faced while entering the position was facing the active COVID-19 pandemic, said Molnar. Molnar noted that Apperson’s strong leadership and guidance were able to help the department push through such a challenging time.

Apperson’s time in fire service began before coming to the Bemus Point department, while he was living in Palm Coast, Fla. Apperson began at this department initially in 1984. While at this department in 1985, Apperson would face a monumental challenge. A massive fire would break out in the area, consuming 130 homes. During this time, Apperson would risk his wellbeing fighting the massive flames right on the front lines.

Apperson would go on to move to the region and join the Bemus Point Fire Department in 1998. Following this move, Apperson would serve the department for 27 years, and would be named chief initially for the 2019-20 year. Apperson’s time in the department saw many major achievements. Apperson would be largely responsible for helping the department secure the V-FIRE Grant from the state, and also saw the department receive multiple pieces of new equipment. Some of these purchases included a new rescue boat, the addition of station two, general overhaul, outfitting new rescue vehicles, and overseeing the installation of the 114-foot aluminum dock in the village.

Molnar shakes hands with Apperson before officially presenting a proclamation recognizing Apperson’s years of service.

The chief engineer role will be taken over by Randy Edwards. Apperson’s service will not be coming to an end though, as he will still continue to serve as an interior firefighter for the village.

Starting at $3.50/week.
