See the flakes fall as you sit inside a snow globe, and help The Wizards of Winter search for the meaning of Christmas.
And while searching, watch and listen to the Wizards perform songs from the band’s rock opera “The Christmas Dream,” while ushering in the sights and sounds of the holiday season.
The rock opera concept was developed by Wizards co-founder and keyboardist Scott Kelly after seeing the Trans-Siberian Orchestra perform its Christmas-themed shows.
Kelly wanted The Wizards of Winter to take concert-goers on a journey.
“After some thought it was settled that we would take a journey on a metaphysical vehicle we call the Arctic Flyer,” Kelly said. “It takes you on a journey of the imagination inside a snow globe in search of the meaning of Christmas.”
Kelly added that the story stays fresh because the Arctic Flyer can make different stops along the way every year or even every night.
“It leaves us flexible to adapt the show as we write new music but still stay within the same framework,” Kelly noted. “The basic concept always remains the same – we search for the meaning of Christmas.”
The keyboardist said the framework is much like that of the long-running science fiction TV series Dr. Who where the doctor takes the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension(s) In Space) and travels through time. The TARDIS is the doctor’s spaceship where its exterior looks like a British Police Box, but when the doctor opens the doors and enters, the interior of TARDIS is much bigger than what appears on the exterior.
Kelly said the journey begins as the band welcomes the audience aboard the Arctic Flyer and then heads into the snow globe.
“We pose the question of why do people seem so much happier this time of year,” Kelly said.
Aboard the Arctic Flyer, stops are made at the first Christmas, with the associated religious content, and the North Pole and beyond.
“Basically we try to explore all of the human experience that the season brings,” Kelly said. “In the end, to us, the holiday encompasses all of it, but is really wrapped in the love of family, friends, and helping those in need.”
Kelly said his favorite part of the show is watching the faces of children and adults when he plays the Grinch. After the Grinch scene, the Wizards play one of their most intense songs – Ebeneezer.
“It (Ebeneezer) is Charles Dickens ‘Christmas Carol’ compressed into a six-minute-long prog(ressive) rock sensory overload for the audience. It is one of the songs we are especially known for,” Kelly said.
The keyboardist noted that with four, full-length albums in the Wizards’ catalog, on any given night, the Wizards will perform about 24 original songs.
Originally, Kelly said, there was no intent of becoming a long-term band. In 2010, the band was formed with his wife and co-founder, Sharon Kelly, lead vocalist and flute, to help raise money for a local food pantry.
“One show became two, became 10, and then it (the show) took on a life of its own. We didn’t start taking things seriously until 2013,” Kelly said.
The co-founder said that the band was formed mostly by word of mouth.
“In 2013, several former members of TSO approached us about touring with us after they heard our originals,” Kelly said. “That led to other connections and over time many other notable musicians have had interest. Luckily most of the members that have joined have remained with us.”
The Wizards of Winter – featuring members who have performed with TSO, Rainbow, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Blue Oyster Cult and Trixter, along with Broadway and theater veterans – will perform Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Reg Lenna Center for The Arts, 116 E. Third St.
“The show has something for every member of the family – from prog rock and metal, to pop ballads, a visit from Mrs. Claus, beach balls, snow ball fights, bubbles and indoor snow,” Kelly said. “The whole idea is to tell the story of Christmas while having a lot of fun along the way. We try to have everyone leave with a big smile.”
