Amendments To Cut City Budget Proposed

The 2026 General Fund Budget is up for approval during the Jamestown City Council’s voting session tonight, but with three planned amendments also set to be voted on as well.

As of right now the budget sits with a proposed 7.5% tax levy increase for city residents. Amendments to the budget will be heard on the floor during tonight’s voting session, with the three proposed amendments under new business on the agenda concerning health insurance, sales tax revenue and the police and fire department retirement budget.

The amendment to the 2026 General Fund Health Insurance Budget sees a decrease of $385,967. For the Sales Tax Revenue the amendment increases that section of the budget by $348,857. The Police and Fire Retirement budget is set to decrease by $51,626.

Other areas of the budget remain concerning for council members and city administration, including a proposed appropriation of the general fund balance of around $3.4 million, over half of what currently remains in the fund balance.

Besides approval of these three amendments and the 2026 General Fund Budget, the voting session agenda also sees a local law for the administration and enforcement of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and the State Energy Conservation Code up for approval by city council, following a public hearing at 6:45 p.m., along with the approval of two change orders, the agreement between the city and Alstar EMS for EMS services, and a lease agreement between the city and the Board of Public Utilities for property at 240 Harrison Street for the purpose of installing an above ground fueling station for City and Board of Public Utilities vehicles.

The city council voting session begins at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers on the second floor of city hall, following the 6:45 p.m. public hearing on the local law, also in the city council chambers.
