JPD Issues Bike Storing Advice During Rash Of Thefts
Be careful where you store your bicycle or your e-bike.
The Jamestown Police Department continues to receive many complaints that traditional bikes, and e-bikes are being stolen throughout the city.
In a recent advisory statement posted on Facebook, JPD officials said many of the victims have had their bike locks cut, and encouraged e-bike and traditional bike owners to bring their bikes inside and not lock them to porches or any other fixed objects as the suspects are using bolt cutters to cut the locks.
Capt. Scott Forster said the areas with the highest theft incidents are North Main Street from Sixth Street to Brooklyn Square, and East Fourth Street to Spring Street, and the West Fourth Street/Cherry Street area.
Forster added that the overnight hours between 8:30 p.m. to 9 a.m. are when most thefts have been occurring.
The captain also said owners should document their bikes and e-bikes.
“The best way to document serial number on an ebike is taking photos of the bike showing color, make, model, and serial number at time of purchase,” Forster said. “You can also personalize the bike with stickers or engravings to make it easier to identify.”
If owners are traveling throughout the city, be sure to not leave any bikes unattended while entering any stores. If an owner has to leave a bike unattended while entering a store, then place a lock on it.
While at home, bikes should be out of sight.
“Either bring them inside or put them somewhere out of sight,” Forster said. “Lighting and cameras are also a way to deter people from going on property and can help identify if there is an incident.”
