It’s a call for local actors, dancers, and singers.
Angelo Valentino has penned a new musical and is looking to talk with area artists at an informal table read at The Spire Theater, 317 E. Third St.
A table read is the beginning stages of a play, musical, or movie, where actors read the script, at a table of course, to hear what works and what doesn’t,
A table read also begins the script’s refinement of dialogue and stage directions.
The musical is entitled Turn.
“Well, the show’s done,” said Valentino, who also will double as director. “All of the music is written, and all of the dialog is written. It’s over 10,000 words, including lyrics and dialogue and stage directions.”
The libretto or the book is almost 80 pages, Valentino said. The book contains all of the dialogue, and stage directions, and basically functions as a script.

“Once we get a cast involved, we might make minor changes,” Valentino said.
Valentino is the artistic director of The Spire Theater.
Turn, Valentino added, is a romantic musical comedy that follows a shy, underachieving boy through the chapters of his life from the 90s to the 2020s. His first heartbreak draws him into the vibrant world of Latin music and culture and ignites his passion for performance.
“Along the way, he discovers not only his voice on stage but also the love of his life, who helps him finally turn the page on the past,” Valentino said “Together, they become an unstoppable showbiz duo, but fame comes at a cost, threatening his marriage and family.”
Just when everything seems lost, the director added, an unexpected twist brings him back to what truly matters. The score fuses Latin Boogaloo, salsa, funk, soul, 90s retro beatnik, and classic Broadway, with a touch of Vaudeville.
Here is the cast list in the eyes of Valentino:
Anthony: A shy boy in his mid-teens who overcomes his shyness and becomes a bilingual Spanish and English song-and-dance man. Ages into his 40s.
Nelly: An easygoing hippy chick/singer. Ages into her 40s.
Beatnik Chorus: Three, overly-dramatic performance artists who take their art very seriously. Always dressed in black or dark shades of grey, brown, or purple, with sunglasses and berets.
Adrian: The snarky, opinionated Beatnik.
Bobby: The dumb and defensive Beatnik.
Eric: Anthony’s lifelong friend singer/musician in a teen garage band. Ages into his 40s.
Steve: A no-nonsense tough guy singer/musician in a teen garage band. Ages into his 40s
Rosa: A teen Latina seductress.
Senorita Cimino: An eccentric, motherly, middle-aged woman, who may or may not be Latina. Also a dance instructor and Spanish as a second language teacher.
Ensemble: Ten to 20 strong dancers and singers.
Kid No. 1: Age 10 to early teens.
Kid No. 2: Age 7-10.
Kid No. 3: Age 6-9.
Valentino said he began working on Turn about five years ago, but started writing the music for the musical in eighth grade.
“I started writing the music for it, actually one of the songs I wrote in eighth grade,” Valentino noted. “Well, at least I wrote most of it in eighth grade, and then I adapted it for the stage.”
His eighth grade was about 30 years ago, Valentino admitted, but he kept on honing his craft.
“Turn is a celebration of love, ambition, and finding beauty in life’s messy, imperfect moments,” Valentino added.
The director said he is hoping he can get ready for a spring performance at The Spire Theater.
