Local Author Publishes Double Novel With Music Focus

TJ Buck

Local author, TJ Buck, whose past focus for his novels has been mostly crime, is once again diving into something new for him, this time in the form of a double novel focused on music.

Music is something that Buck said has been in his life since he was a kid, specifically the punk rock genre. With this in mind, the one novel in the book “Haley’s Comet” focuses on musician Bill Haley and his life and works. Buck said this story only ended up at about 40,000 words, so he decided to add another story focused on punk rock music to it.

The second novel in the book, “The Sea Still Sings”, focuses on a fictional band in the original punk rock scene, whose singer steps out of the spotlight. Buck said the narrator and main character of the story is a girl in her 20s who goes to find the lead singer and eventually the two talk and share stories.

“It’s stories from two generations of music that go together in one book,” Buck said. “I wanted to try something different and focus on music. I like to try different stuff. I started with crime and have done one supernatural and one comedy crime novel, so I hope people who have read me before will read and follow it.”

Buck said he has been into music since he was little, with pictures existing of him as a kid playing a Ringo Star drum and his brother also being one of the original leads in the 10,000 Maniacs band. Buck has also written musically focused articles during his career as a journalist.

His newest double novel is to hit people of different music generations, Buck said, including for people who may remember Buck Haley but are not familiar with his life. Punk rock is also something he said remains popular with his generation, and so people may be interested in a story on punk rock and its history.

“It’s my tribute to music, being a big music fan,” Buck said.

As for future book plans, this new book is Buck’s 13th book and 13th and 14th novel, and he said he has no plans to stop writing.

“As long as I’m alive I will keep writing,” Buck said. “It’s something I can do from home. I love writing, it’s fun for me.”

Buck noted that this specific book may be more attractive to people who do not necessarily like crime novels as it is different from his past works. He also designed the cover himself.

All of Buck’s works are available now on Amazon and at most local libraries.
