WESTFIELD — Last Wednesday, a fire on McKinley Road in Westfield claimed the life of Alice Waters. At just 43 years old, Waters left behind an 18-year-old son, Reyn.
Without his mother to help him on his journey into adulthood, a fundraiser was organized to support Reyn as he moves forward into college.
Pamela Herdeman, organizer of the fundraiser, stated, “Reyn has shown courage and resilience in the face of so much unrest and uncertainty.” She defined Reyn as “smart and determined.”
Reyn recently completed the Information Technology program through BOCES and has been accepted to SUNY Canton, where he will pursue his degree in Information Technology. His tuition will be covered, but for many of his other expenses, he is on his own.
SUNY Canton requires Reyn to live on campus and buy a meal plan. He will also need a laptop, textbooks, transportation to and from school. The fundraiser aims to address those needs, while also providing funds for him to return home for his mother’s celebration of life.
As of Monday, roughly $2,000 had been raised, with more than 10 donations of $100 or more.
Herdeman said, “I know Reyn personally. He is such a kind person with a big heart. He has been dealt a tough hand and he is trying hard to look forward and stay positive even when he keeps feeling like he’s being pulled backwards. I believe in Reyn and believe he will reach the stars if we could just give him that little lift to get started.”
