LAKEWOOD – No one was injured after a hot air balloon floated into some power lines Tuesday.

According to Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department Chief Kurt Hallberg, the call was received at around 7:40 p.m.

Hallber said the balloon pilot said he got caught in a gust of wind, and was not able to control the balloon. The balloon got tangled in a field between Webster Street and Stoneman Avenue. In that area of the village, Hallberg said the power lines are located near houses, and are not located near streets.

Hallberg said National Grid employees responded to the scene.

“National Grid got there very quickly, and cut the power, and we were able to get them out.”

Hallberg noted that five people were in the gondola, and were safely rescued.

“Everybody was fine,” Hallberg said. “We brought both ambulances.”

None of the riders requested medical treatment. The rescue, Hallberg said, took about 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

The Lakewood-Busti Police Department assisted the LVFD at the scene.

“I am just happy that we could assist the fire department and everybody was safe,” Chief Matthew Bentley said.
