BEMUS POINT – Some special furry four-legged friends took a walk and played games, starting at Bemus Point Golf Club and Tap House on Saturday to raise money for a good cause.

Kristen McNitt, the owner and proprietor of Golden Acres Dog Kennel, has dedicated more than 20 years to breeding and training therapy-focused miniature golden retrievers and mini golden doodles for use as therapy and service dogs. She has placed puppies across the Northeastern United States.

“My puppies are used all over as therapy dogs for children and adults with special needs or medical needs,” she said. “I have dogs placed in New York City, Long Island, and all over. It’s like little bits of puppy love all over,” McNitt said in a March 24th edition of The Post-Journal.

McNitt specializes in crafting a distinctive combination of dog breeds, resulting in a highly perceptive and attuned canine. This exceptional breed possesses a remarkable temperament and exceptional intelligence, making it a versatile companion. The dogs have an acute awareness, they excel not only as a devoted therapy dog but also as a reliable service dog, offering support and comfort to those in need, and great family pets, said McNitt.

Petite and miniature golden retrievers are hybrids, akin to goldendoodles. These charming pups resemble smaller versions of golden retrievers. This breed is known for its excellent temperament and compact size, along with some hypoallergenic qualities and reduced shedding, as noted by McNitt. Referring to them as Goldendoodles would be misleading. They possess a high percentage of golden retriever genetics combined with a lesser amount of poodle, making them exceptional service dogs and family pets. Typically, these dogs weigh between 25 and 45 pounds when fully grown, according to Golden Acres Dogs.

On Sunday, a reunion, fundraiser, and walking event took place at the Bemus Point Golf Club and Tap House, featuring several four-legged dogs from Golden Acres Dog Kennel alongside their human companions. Submitted photo

McNitt organized a lively day of reunion and fun for her extended four-legged family. The gathering featured a walk, engaging doggy games, and opportunities for social interaction among the dozen or so canine companions in attendance. Activities included a scenic walk, playful course, and conversations.

Daniel Klaes, an owner of one of McNitt’s dogs from North Tonawanda, said in a Facebook post regarding the Saturday Golden Acres Dog Walk, Reunion/Fundraiser, “We had a great time at the first annual Golden Acres dog walk and reunion! Peanut (dog) and Auggie (dog) brought their energy to the fun games, reminding us all of the joy and connection our furry friends bring into our lives. Peanut (dog) had the opportunity to check in with his mother, grandmother, and sister, while Auggie enjoyed a heartfelt reunion with his brother. Though the day was a little overcast, our spirits were bright, undeterred by the clouds above. It was a beautiful reminder that every moment spent together counts, and the funds raised for Chautauqua Christian Academy will foster brighter futures for many. Together, we celebrated love, community, and the bonds that inspire us.”

McNitt envisions transforming this event into an annual tradition.

Starting at $3.50/week.
