There is a lot of laughter and a lot of love when it comes to twin sisters Margie Trethewy and Jerry Carlson.

The 95-year-old twins — though Carlson jokes that she is 45 — have not seen each other in 15 years, as Carlson is a Jamestown resident but Trethewy lives in Phoenix, Arizona. This past weekend, Trethewy returned to the area to see her sister for the weekend.

“I think it’s been about 15 years since I last saw her,” Trethewy said. “I said I’d like to see my twin sister at least one more time before I go.”

Following this, Carlson jokingly asked Trethewy where she was going, to which Trethewy replied that she was “going upstairs.”

Growing up together, the pair said they had a great childhood, describing doing things such as swimming in Chautauqua Lake, which they lived right off of, and doing “everything the boys did.”

“We went swimming almost every day when we were growing up,” Carlson said. “And then I went and married a Swede.”

Trethewy said Calrson eloped when she married, describing how she did not know where she was when Carlson did not come home one night. She added that the next day she got the call while at work that Carlson eloped.

“I cried so hard that they had to send me home, because I didn’t have my twin sister anymore,” Trethewy said. “And now, you know, she does, anyone in the family who’s going to get married, she says, ‘well elope, that’s what I did.'”

The two would also roller skate — and Trethewy said she would make fun of Carlson when they did, and tell everyone she skated like a clown — climb ropes, do tricks in the yard, and were also known to switch classrooms in school from time to time. The two would climb up their door at their childhood home, hold onto the top, and jump down, saying they thought they were great when they did. Trethewy also used to ice skate, which Carlson said she was unable to do.

During their reunion last weekend, the two and their families got together for dinner. Trethewy has seven children all together, and Carlson has three. Trethewy, who these days has lost all feeling in her legs and travels around in a wheelchair, married a musician, and added that her life focused around music.

“I was very happy with my life as an entertainer’s life,” Trethewy said. “She’s happy that I’m her twin sister. She won’t admit it, but she is. Twin’s fight, but we’re always there for each other.”

Carlson agreed with Trethewy, saying “I’m the best friend she’s got.”
