County Keeping Jamestown Offices For Now

MAYVILLE – There are no immediate plans to relocate some Chautauqua County offices from Jamestown to the Chautauqua Mall in Lakewood.

That doesn’t mean the idea is completely dead.

During the county legislature meeting, lawmakers agreed to renew its lease for the Department of Motor Vehicles at its office at 512 West Third St. as well as its Mental Hygiene office at 333 E. Fifth St., both for another two years.

Both properties are owned by Jamestown’s Rental Properties, LLC.

In December, the owners of the Chautauqua County Mall, Summit Properties, appeared at the county legislature meeting and presented a plan to have professional office space there, including the DMV and various departments in Health and Human Services.

During the legislature’s May meeting, Legislator Tom Nelson, D-Jamestown, said he was in support of renewing the leases for Mental Hygiene and the DMV in the city.

“We all saw a presentation of moving the county offices to the Chautauqua Mall. I know it’s two years away, possibly, but I just want to go on the record that, representing Jamestown, I’d be opposed to that idea,” he said.

During the legislature’s Public Facilities Committee meeting, Josh Rothwell, assistant director of Public Facilities for buildings and grounds, said normally they do a five-year lease extension. In both cases, these lease extensions are for two years.

“We’re up in the air on how we’re going to do everything in the south county,” he said.

Rothwell also noted that there’s been some issues with the Jamestown DMV, although things are getting better.

“There’s been some issues in the past with maintenance and stuff … Things have gotten better but we didn’t want to get into a long-term lease, until we know with that stuff that we’re going to be satisfied,” he said.

The resolutions to extend the two leases were unanimously passed.

Starting at $3.50/week.
